The Arcade Manufacturing Company began producing household items such as coffee grinders in 1885, and added toys in 1888. By the early 1900s, the company was doing so well, they issued their own 50-page catalogue of toys. Arcade specialized in highly detailed road vehicles including their famous yellow cab. The success of its Yellow Cab inspired a line of miniature cars, trucks, farm equipment, and buses. Over 250 different toys were made in a variety of sizes with turning wheels and different color schemes were made. "They look real" became the official company motto. In 1946 Rockwell Manufacturing Company of Buffalo bought the firm and discontinued the Arcade products.

It features a silver like appearance made out of cast metal with glass globe. All coins are acceptable with this machine and can be a great way to teach kids to save money, while at the same time being able to be rewarded with a treat. It can be filled with gumballs, peanuts, jellybeans or whatever candy you desire. Its beautiful silver appearance wouldn't look out of place in an executive's office, and at the same time, it can be ideal in your kids room. Its antique silver appearance makes it like a decor piece, except with function.

By Megan Romer (Lafayette, LA)- Buying a kids accordion is probably something your average parent wouldn't even consider; most folks don't like accordion music, and the idea of a kid squeezing and squeezing on one of these things is about as appealing as a hole in the head. However, most people have misconstrued ideas about what this instrument would sound like. First of all, this is a diatonic accordion, meaning it's tuned to only one key. The buttons make different sounds depending on whether you're pushing or pulling on the bellows. Diatonic accordions are popular in Cajun and Zydeco, Irish Music, Tex-Mex and Conjunto, Gypsy Music, and various other forms of world music. They are not the accordions typically used in polka. Because of the diatonic setup, your kid can't play a sour note! It's like giving them an 8-note wide section of a piano, with no black keys. Sure, if they try, they'll still be able to drive you nuts with this thing, but most likely, they'll enjoy trying to pick out songs. Buy them a Cajun or Zydeco CD to go along with it (try Buckwheat Zydeco's kids album: Choo Choo Boogaloo) and hopefully they'll be inspired and want to play real music on it. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

By A Customer- I was very pleased with this item. I had not expected such a nice tone from it. My 6 year old grandson was giving "concerts" the same night he opened his present. Amazingly, his "music" is quite nice to hear. This is definitely not another "noise making" toy. You will like it very much.

By Meg (Long Island, NY United States) I found this toy in a local Homegoods store, and was having a blast playing it in the store. I'm so happy to find the same product online because the one in the store had been damaged. It really sounds like an accordion, the air really comes in and out of it and it has to have the air inside of it in order to play the sounds, not your usual childs toy. Oh and i'm 22 years old, and i'm buying it for myself. My niece can play with it when she comes over..MAYBE.

Shuffleboard has emerged again due to its popularity on luxury cruise ships. With the recession leaving many people short on indispensable cash, games like golf have slowed down and have been traded for less expensive entertainment. Shuffleboard originated over 500 years ago and was the royals choice of game. Shuffleboard is an excellent game to combine with entertaining. Pair it with a nice glass of wine, and enjoy a good conversation. Shuffleboard also has low physical fitness requirements, so it is a rather leisurely game to be enjoyed with friends and family.

Players use a broom-shaped paddle and push weighted pucks down the rectangular elongated court with the intention to rest their puck in a marked scoring area. After all pucks have been sent to the one 'end', and scores are marked, then the next set continues in the opposite direction. There is no need to retrieve pucks after a game is finished, as the players just move to the opposite side of the game board to play the next match. The first player to reach 50 points wins the game.

In deck shuffleboard, the stick is called a "tang", and the weighted disks are called biscuits.

The Shuffleboard Set to the left is even very popular with kids! Everyone can play.

On the deck of the playing area, the zone is divided horizontally into four numbered sub-zones. The numbers are representitive of point values.

- If the biscuit or puck lands completely within the small triangular tip zone without touching any part of the borders of the triangle, it is worth ten points

- If the biscuit or puck lands completely within within the trapezoidal second tier of the triangle, it is worth eight points

- If the biscuit or puck lands completely within the trapezoidal third tier of the triangle, it is then worth seven points.

- If the biscuit lands in the trapezoidal '10 Off' section, it costs minus ten points. Some games have a small triangle drawn in the center of the '10 off' trapezoid, splitting the sections making it very hard to land completely inside the section.

The game is played in matches of ten frames. The basic strategy involves deflecting the opposition's biscuits out of zones so they cannot gain points, and allowing a persons opportunity to increase their own points by landing disks into areas of a high point value.

What makes an antique toy worth top dollar? Several things are important when evaluating how much antique toys are worth including the condition, the rarity and the manufacturer of the toy. Age often pushes antique furniture to be more valuable, where as toys, age is less important as most American production toys were made after 1850. A seller labeling a toy with "mint condition" is a toy that is a "gem in a haystack". Think about a senerio where a present was forgotton in the attic for 40 years, with the orginal box and instructions, and it was never opened. Toys unlike other things are not likely to be in pristine condition as they are played with, and the toy box is often discarded. Toys with the orginal box often demand top dollar, but here is a guide below to identify what a potential toy is worth.

According to "Toys and Prices 1997 4th Edition" by Krause Publishing.

MIB, MIP, MOMC (Mint in Box, Mint in Package, Mint on Mint Card) - The toy with this label is just like new, in the original package, and preferably still sealed. The box may have been opened, but any packages inside remain unopened. If the toy is on a blister card, the package is intact and unopened. New toys in boxes, where the boxes remain factory sealed, can often command higher prices.

MNP, MNB (Mint No Package, Mint No Box) - This describes a toy in mint condition, but it is not in it's original box.

NM (Near Mint) - A toy that appears like new in it's overall appearance but has very minor wear and does not have the original box. An exception would be a toy that comes in kit form. A kit toy in Near Mint condition would be expected to have the original box, but the box would display some wear.

EX (Excellent) - A toy that is complete and has been played with. Signs of minor wear may be evident, but the toy is very clean and well cared for.

VG (Very Good) - A toy that obviously has been played with and shows general wear overall. Paint chipping is readily apparent. In metal toys, some minor rust may be evident. In sets, some minor pieces may be missing.

GD (Good) - A toy with evidence of heavy play, dents, chips, and possibly moderate rust. The toy may be missing a major replaceable component, such as a battery compartment door, or it may be in need of repair. In sets, several pieces may be missing.

Most common toys that have been found have been carved wooden dolls, cloth and rag dolls, corn-shuck and apple-head dolls. Beautiful hand made doll houses in exquisite detail are commonly found in folk artists as well as stuffed animals, carved wooden animals and Noah's Arks. Many wooden pull-toys are common as well as carved and jointed figures, jack-in-the box, jig-saw puzzles, whistles, pond boats, kaleidoscopes and rocking horses.

Toy tractors are fetching a lot of money these days. Toy manufacturers in the 1900s made cast-iron toys in the which are still intact today, while today's toys are made of plastic and break before they are worn out. You can usually date a toy tractor by the material it’s made of and by the design of the tractor. Most were made as models of full-size machines. You can also look at how the wheels and tires are made, to date the toy. Paint finishes as well as the clothing on the driver usually help locate a date. Many people are realizing that today's toys don't last, and are leaning towards antique toys because they hold up extremely well, in addition to the old fashioned charm they hold.
Some of the companies that made toy tractors wanted by collectors are Arcade Manufacturing Co. (1868-1946), Hubley (1894-1965), Marklin (1859-present), Weeden Manufacturing Co. (1883-1942) and Vindex, the trade name used by the National Sewing Machine Co. (1930-38).

This 5¾-inch-cast-iron Fordson toy tractor with a driver is marked “Arcade.” The tractor is painted, the driver is nickel-plated, the wheels are solid metal and the tires are rubber. Tom Harris Auctions in Marshalltown, Iowa, sold it for $224.

Decorating a childs bedroom can be a very fun project. You can make it as simple or as complex as you like. One key to a great room is to add texture and interest. Some of the simplest ways of adding texture is to add wallpaper that already has an interesting design. You can add cut-outs which were photocopied from Library books. Don't be afraid of using bright pops of color. Instead of adding one solid color on the walls try breaking up the wall with taped boxes, where when you pull the tape off your left with 2 or three colors instead of one solid wall color.

Our parents painted 2 walls in our home with chalk board paint, and we used it to spell and practice our handwriting. You can add color into a child's room by painting their furniture. If you love the antique feel, go for the rustics,- the dark reds, butterscotch, and olive greens. There are just too many combinations to mention. One site I have found particularly helpful is the Color Lovers site, where they combine the colors for you. One favorite toy can inspire your whole room.

Die-cast cars are a hot collectable item today, as more current cars are released. While children tend to go for the trendy cars of today paying only a few dollars, the older audiences are willing to pick up the collectables at higher prices. The price range depends on the condition, age, and rareness of the car. It is not surprising to know that lifelong collectors sell off their collections and make thousands, as some of these vintage cars fetch a hefty price alone.

Murray Manufacturing is a popular vintage brand many people come across as they are looking for a vintage pedal car. The company was founded around 1908. They produced Steelcraft Toys and a lot of pull toys. After World War II, they concentrated on pedal cars and bicycles.

The really old antique pedal cars can be found, but they are often not in mint condition with the original paint in pristine condition. An antique that is in great condition can fetch between 2K and 4K. Most often, they are found in rough condition, as parents did not want to bring the dirt into the home, as well they were quite large that most homes would not be able to accommodate them, so they were often left outside exposed to the rain and snow.

Ford T Model Speedster Scale Replica Seller Urban Archaeology

If you are considering buying one of these pedal cars just for play and fun, rather than an investment, consider buying an antique that you can fix up yourself. The vintage collectibles were often painted in bright fun playful colors.

If your pedal toy is rusted, you will need to strip and sand the old paint and rust from the body. If there is any rents, weld cracks and holes, repair those areas before you paint. You will want to paint the inside and outside, and you can have the accessory parts sent away to be chrome plated. I am sure many people will have their opinions of what paint to use, and how to use it.

If you have a Pep Boys near you they have automotive paint colors to choose from. Summit has a beautiful paint line.

If you want a pretty great oil paint, consider Rustoleum Oil Paint at your local Home Depot or Hardware store. They have a number of great colors to choose from, in satin and gloss. I would highly recommend gloss, as it gives the appearance of new instead of choosing satin that could look dull. You could also blend a couple colors together and make a custom color. Professional paint shops carry tint-able oil paint in almost every color. I would always recommend using a sprayer to get an even finish. If you cannot find a spray in oil, I would recommend applying your paint with a inexpensive sponge brush for an even application. All in all, with a slight sand, and additional coat, your pedal car will be show quality.

Toy trains of wood, tinplate, and cast iron have been widely made making buying a unique toy train set accessible. Early antique toy trains were operated by hand, clockwork, or by simple spring mechanisms. Tin plate, mostly used for oil cans around 1874-1875, and was also used for toys as Japan became the main producer of tin plate toys. In the 1880s tinplate trains lost favor to cast-iron trains, which were then mass-produced in huge quantities. In the 1890s cast iron was replaced by lithographed tinplate. Lithograph Tin plate was quite a bit lighter, making distributing and shipping more affordable. In 1948, wind up friction toys emerged and by 1955, electronic trains took over the wind up models. By 1970 tin plate toys had gradually disappeared as plastic and metal alloy toys emerged.

If you are looking for an attractive set as a gift and are not concerned about purchasing something antique, then there are quality replicas of antique toys available at affordable prices.

Today electric trains are considered more collectible than an antique toy trains. The very best American original toy trains were by Ives, Lionel, and American Flyer. In 1928 Ives was bought out by both Flyer and Lionel, and shortly after in 1930 Lionel became the owner of Ives. In 1968, it bought out American Flyer, and finally in 1953 the company closed its doors. Collectors today are enamored with the interesting and unusual trains that were produced from Ives as a result of the merging of Lionel and Ives. One thing is for sure, these toy trains will always be popular!

Game boards are a great way of connecting with the family. It seems these days the television is on, and families often go their own separate ways. These antique games can be fun for just and for your kids. Get a glass of wine, and play outside on the patio for a night of good conversation.

Depending on the age of the board, some of the antique wooden board games can be as expensive as 5K. You can find some fabulous antique game boards on ebay for as little as $20, including Pachisi, Backgammon, Bulls-eye.

Country Living Magazine had an interesting article of a talented woman who makes her own antique game boards from designs of 18th and 19th century wooden game boards. Diane Allison was originally was a quilter at heart but came across the game boards and was attracted to the geometrical patterns that originally attracted her to quilting. Today she reproduces the antique games, basing the colors of the original designs, and sells them as a business. What a great idea! You can check out her interesting painted boards here.
