Pedal cars have been around since the turn of the century, and admittedly it was my favorite toy at my grandparents. Some of the most interesting pedal cars are the 1955 Chevy Belairs, the Model T pedal cars , the 1932 Roadster pedal car, the 1965 Mustangs, and Comets. Today pedal vehicles can be found in cute fire trucks, pedal planes, and farm trucks.

The really old antique pedal cars can be found, but they are often not in mint condition with the original paint in pristine condition. An antique that is in great condition can fetch between 2K and 4K. Most often, they are found in rough condition, as parents did not want to bring the dirt into the home, as well they were quite large that most homes would not be able to accommodate them, so they were often left outside exposed to the rain and snow.

If you are considering buying one of these pedal cars just for play and fun, rather than an investment, consider buying an antique that you can fix up yourself. The vintage collectibles were often painted in bright fun playful colors.
If your pedal toy is rusted, you will need to strip and sand the old paint and rust from the body. If there is any rents, weld cracks and holes, repair those areas before you paint. You will want to paint the inside and outside, and you can have the accessory parts sent away to be chrome plated. I am sure many people will have their opinions of what paint to use, and how to use it.
If you have a Pep Boys near you they have automotive paint colors to choose from. Summit has a beautiful paint line.
If you want a pretty great oil paint, consider Rustoleum Oil Paint at your local Home Depot or Hardware store. They have a number of great colors to choose from, in satin and gloss. I would highly recommend gloss, as it gives the appearance of new instead of choosing satin that could look dull. You could also blend a couple colors together and make a custom color. Professional paint shops carry tint-able oil paint in almost every color. I would always recommend using a sprayer to get an even finish. If you cannot find a spray in oil, I would recommend applying your paint with a inexpensive sponge brush for an even application. All in all, with a slight sand, and additional coat, your pedal car will be show quality.
